Momokan is fairly tall for a girl, and fairly...um, statuesque.

Personality:

The first time we meet Maria Momoe--hereby called 'Momokan'--she is literally dragging the very shy protagonist of Ookiku Furikabutte by the wrist to make him come over to the baseball diamond. This is honestly a great introduction to her character, because that little motion tells the audience a million things about her. First off, Momokan's a determinator to say the least--she rarely takes no for an answer for almost anything. Having worked to start up a hardball club at Nishiura for the past several years of her life, Momokan never gives up on anything, whether they're wimpy pitchers, her own players, or even administration battling her and her plans. This sort of determination leads to a similar devotion, in that she really and truly loves these things that she works hard for. Momokan also graduated from Nishiura, back when the school only had a softball team (that she played for--more on that later) and her love for her alma mater knows no bounds. She'll do anything for the school and anything for her players, the nishiura nine, including taking on shitty jobs like window cleaning in order to pay for their travel and uniforms when the school wouldn't provide them any money. The Nishiura nine are not only her project, but they're her life, and that makes her the most devoted coach anyone could ever ask for. She loves these kids with every inch of her heart, and as a female coach with no kids or any interest in dating or anything like that, they are her entire world... though she's much less the kind mom and much more the strict one.

That soft squishy part of her is a little less obvious most of the time, considering that she is in fact The Strict Mom. The strictest mom, even. She has no time for anyone's bullshit, and has quite the temper, enough that she can strike fear into the hearts of her players pretty easily. She gained their respect the very first day, as one of the boys made a comment about how he couldn't have 'a weak girl' for a coach, and Momokan not only showed him up with an incredible amount of ball control, executing a perfect pop fly and balancing a ball on a metal bat with no trouble, but she then proceeded to show him up in a show of strength by literally crushing oranges with her bare hands and offering him a glass of orange juice with a smile. Momokan has no time for anyone's misogyny or for anyone underestimating her or her team, and though she can put on a nice bright smile, there's often a layer of murder directly underneath it. Momokan demands respect and earns it, and she's willing to get it through whatever means necessary.

In fact, she's willing to get most things through whatever means necessary. Washing windows was just the beginning: she will beg/plead/connive/kidnap and do whatever it takes to get good matches for her team...or just good players. She won't let Mihashi get away when she learns about his skills, and these same skills get her really, really excited too. Momokan just loves baseball: if she was a boy, she'd be playing hardball all the time. Since she can't, she puts her heart and mind both into coaching 100%. Her own knowledge of baseball and how the game works is massive and she understands how to utilize her players to the best of their ability, a skill that seems hereditary, as we've gotten to see Momokan's father was a player for seido a powerful high school in Tokyo back in his day as well. Momokan is incredibly clever and occasionally shares moments of concerning evil with Abe, her team's catcher, as they discuss how to break down the other team they're playing emotionally as well as physically in order to win. It's a little scary.

This scariness in her personality is a little different when it comes to the parents of the students that she's teaching, as well as other coaches. Momokan is extremely aware of her status both as a girl and as a young woman--she's only 23--and high school baseball is a tough field to break into in Japan, especially for someone like her. The parents comment that she's a kind and sweet girl, because in reality, she is. She really wants to impress the parents and wants them to like her--she cares a lot about what they think and is very kind to all of them. It's a little jarring for the team, who are used to seeing Momokan in sweats and barking at them on the field: seeing her in a dress with her hair done is a weird experience for all of them. All in all, Momokan just cares how people perceive her, and she can switch around from a tomboy coach to a kind young woman to someone who can drink like a fish with the other coaches with no problem.

Momokan has all the qualities of a good coach. She's respected, she's loved, and more than anything, she knows how to help her team win--more than anything, she wants them to win. Though her temper could probably use some work, she's a really good person and just the kind of coach that Nishiura needs.

Abilities:

As I mentioned a little above, Momokan's abilities have to do with baseball. She can execute a perfect pop fly and throws a mean fastball. She's also very clever and smart when it comes to the sport.

Also she can squeeze oranges dry with her bare hands. So, you know.

First Person:

Third Person:

Clang! Clang!

It's not unusual to hear the sound of people practicing in the batting cages late at night at the HHSC. Baseball is the second-most popular sport around, currently, but this person in the batting cage is a little different than any of the others. For starters, she's an adult, instead of one of the numerous teenage athletes that seem to populate Holly Heights.

Also, she's a girl. Said girl is Maria Momoe, who's hitting hardball pitches because it's a good stress relief, and there's nothing more stressful than being ( clang!) kidnapped ( clang! ) when your team ( clang! ) is in the middle of a very, very important tournament -- ( CLANG!! )

The last hit Momokan makes hits the back wall of the cage and she steps back, tipping the batting helmet off her head and staring after it for a second with her brows furrowed. Shigapo would probably scold her for losing her temper, and he can almost hear his calm voice in the back of her head telling her to slow down a little. Sometimes Momoe gets excited--sometimes she gets angry. The passion in her for baseball, for her Nishiura nine, is enough that it drives her and makes her a little more emotional than the teachings they try to give.

Runner on third, right? Runner on third.

Momoe takes a deep breath and rubs her hand over her face. With only Mihashi here--and the kids from the school in Tokyo, her father's players, bigger stronger faster than anything they have at Nishiura (not that she doesn't think they could beat them, at their best, when Abe's okay)--she has no plans of moving out of coach mode. Each of the players on Seido can be used to their full potential--the catcher with the glasses is a genius, the kind of player Abe will be when he's older, the two pink ones are insane batters and there are three pitchers, each one different than the rest--and Momokan plans on drawing that out however she can. She needs to study them, needs to watch them work and then steal their techniques and bring every single one of them back to Nishiura.

Hm. Not a bad idea.

She needs to get that documented properly to bring it back home when she gets back to Nishiura (or for when her players arrive) and Momokan drops the bat and moves over to turn off the machine, muttering something to herself as she checks the settings.
